Created to conquer Mount Panorama and outgun Ford in Group C Touring Car warfare, the Holden LX Torana SS A9X was the pinnacle of Holden’s factory-built muscle. Launched in 1977 as an option pack on the LX-series SL/R 5000 sedan and SS hatchback, the A9X – named after an Aboriginal word for flying – wasn’t just about cosmetics or bolt-ons. It came engineered with strengthened components, a racy rear end, rear disc brakes and high-performance wheels, designed to take on the Falcon hardtops dominating the mid-’70s. Only 500 A9X Toranas were ever produced – 305 sedans and 195 hatchbacks – making this model as rare as it was formidable. With its superior suspension geometry, racing-grade stopping power and light weight, the A9X was built for Bathurst from day one. Peter Brock’s 1979 Bathurst win in an A9X, capped by his legendary burnout across the finish line, became the defining moment of both his career and the Torana’s place in motorsport history.
That proud legacy still thunders through every A9X Torana today. Brock and Harvey delivered a dominant 1-2 finish at Bathurst in 1978, before Brock returned in 1979 to secure a crushing six-lap victory – the ultimate farewell for the Torana on the Mountain. To race in Group C, Holden had to meet strict homologation rules, which meant producing at least 500 road-going A9Xs identical in shell, engine and core components to their race machines. The A9X was literally built to win straight out of the showroom. Much of this success can be credited to the late Joe Felice, whose determination to beat Ford on the track fostered the legendary Holden Dealer Team and a decade of Torana icons – from the LC and LJ XU-1s to the V8 L34 and the mighty A9X. Now, The Bradford Exchange is proud to honour both Joe Felice’s vision and the flying Holden Torana with an exclusive 1:18-scale resin sculpture of the SS A9X in classic red – meticulously handcrafted to capture every defining detail of the original Bathurst legend.
